Water Retaining Structures
We are experienced in all aspects of water retaining structure design and are involved in the development of best practice for the risk based performance assessment of water retaining structures. We work closely with our clients to guide them in managing and maintaining their assets cost effectively.
Locks & gates
We have considerable expertise in delivering port access and river navigation projects in the UK and abroad. Our skills include feasibility assessment, preparation of business cases, design development and detailed geotechnical, structural, hydraulic, mechanical and electrical design for both new structures and refurbishment of existing assets.
Dams
Our experience includes the design of embankment dams in accordance with the 1975 Reservoirs Safety Act. We have recently designed flood storage reservoir dams for three locations in North East Scotland. We also assess the likelihood and potential implications of failure of embankment dams, including numerical hydraulic modelling of the resulting flood inundation.
Embankments
Royal Haskoning is involved in the geotechnical and hydraulic design and risk-based performance assessment of water retaining earth embankments. We contribute to the development of best practice in this field, which is being applied in a number of high profile flood risk management projects. We are also working with the US Army Corps of Engineers to deliver improvements to the hurricane and storm risk reduction system in New Orleans, particularly in relation to the levee embankments, following the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
