Renewable energy is the key to radically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and represents a fundamental shift towards minimising our demand for fossil fuel, while bringing clean, safe and affordable energy to homes and businesses.
Central to the Government’s plan for ensuring the UK addresses climate change and achieves a low-carbon, sustainable future; renewable energy provides new hope for the UK economy with the potential to create 500,000 more jobs, resulting from around £100 billion of new investment.
Through the European Renewable Energy Directive, the UK is committed to generate 15 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, this is equal to a seven-fold increase in UK renewable energy consumption from 2008. It is looking mainly to wind power to help it achieve this.
