Royal Haskoning is a leading water’s edge consultancy providing unrivalled environmental and engineering advice to clients across the globe. Our focus lies in reducing carbon emissions whilst at the same time creating more efficient port operations.
Ports are under pressure from their customers to provide faster and more streamlined cargo handling; from their communities to become better neighbours, from legislators to become greener; and from their owners to remain profitable at a time of falling income. In the current climate of reduced trade and investment, it is becoming increasingly difficult for ports and terminal owners to achieve the necessary environmental improvements being enforced by legislation.
Royal Haskoning’s ‘Green Ports’ initiative is built on four key themes:
- sustainability
- environmental management
- emissions management
- climate change
In today’s economic climate most ports are inevitably seeing reduced trade and income, presenting them with tough decisions to be made about where available funds should be prioritised and invested. Clearly the majority of these resources are aimed at efficient operation and ports will have to weigh up their contribution towards environmental compliance.
Many ports already have environmental management policies, with some attaining ISO 14001 certification. In order to retain this accreditation ports must adhere to a continuing environmental management process. In addition, more environmental legislation is being introduced which ports will have to comply with in order to avoid penalties.
Royal Haskoning provides a range of services that enable practical measures to be introduced to enable ports to both comply with legislation and achieve the objectives of their environmental policies.
