Results of interim report for SUDS scheme show considerable return over conventional drainage

As part of a European funded project led by Cambridgeshire County Council, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) were incorporated in a pioneering housing development at Lamb Drove in Cambourne which was completed in 2006.

In order to review the benefits this new system brought to the local community, a 2 year monitoring programme of the site was launched. Commissioned by Cambridgeshire County Council and funded by Defra, Cambridgeshire Horizons and the Environment Agency, the interim results of the programme have now been issued.

The initial findings of this project, carried out by engineering and environmental consultancy Royal Haskoning, have been published this month in an interim report together with a summary note. The findings confirm the significant advantages for SUDS over conventional drainage techniques and show measurable improvements to water quality and substantial mitigation of drainage flows, reducing the probability of flooding as a result of high rainfall.

The initial results are being used to help guide Defra’s national approach to sustainable drainage. The final monitoring report is expected in January 2011.
