Shoreham Toll Bridge, at Shoreham-by-Sea, has been a popular and much used landmark in the heart of the West Sussex countryside for over 200 years.

The Grade II* listed structure was originally built over the River Adur in 1781, replacing the flat raft that had previously transported people and livestock across the river between Shoreham and Lancing. The toll bridge continued to be used right up until 1968 when it became a public bridleway.

Extensive use over the years caused the structure to deteriorate considerably and, despite periodic repair works, the parapets were fenced off in 1997. In 1999 the bridge was placed on the annual English Heritage ‘Buildings at Risk’ register.
